4 proven ways to help with depression

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, mental illness affects all Canadians either directly or indirectly through family or friends. It is estimated 20% of Canadians will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Mental illness affects people of all ages, educational and income levels, and cultures. Approximately 20% of all Canadians will suffer some form of major depression in their lifetime.

Recent research has found that complementary therapies are effective in the treatment of depression.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture was found to be as effective as counselling alongside usual care in the treatment of depression, according to researchers at the university of York. A more recent study from China found that acupuncture was effective in the treatment of depression and helped with different personality traits such as hysteria, paranoia and social introversion.

Allergy Therapy
A review of different studies found an association between schizophrenia and gluten sensivity. Another study published in the Journal of Bipolar disorder found an association between casein (milk protein) and mood symptoms of bipolar sufferers.

Ayurvedic Medicine
Study shows that the herb, Mamsyadi Kwatha, commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine has anti-depressant activity.

Massage
In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, massage was shown to be an effective treatment for symptoms of depression.

Nutrition
Magnesium deficiency has been shown to give rapid recovery to major depression, according to research in the USA. Researchers from Denmark found that low levels of B6 in the blood were associated with depression symptoms.
