Shiatsu for Runners

Are you preparing for a race or do you enjoy running as a recreational activity? If so you may want to consider receiving a shiatsu treatment.

Shiatsu uses thumb, palm and knee pressure to release trigger points, myofascial tissue, muscle tension and provides assisted stretching to restore strength and energy to weary runners. Regular shiatsu treatments have been shown to improve your run as it opens the energetic pathways (meridians) to allow the body and mind to function with greater clarity.

Receiving a shiatsu treatment the day prior to race day is highly recommended as it balances the energetic and physical body.  This allows you to enjoy your run with fewer physical restrictions, reduced muscle fatigue and a feeling of energetic balance in every stride. Through my practice I have found that by releasing the Gluteals, Piriformis and Illiotibial band, along with walking lightly on the feet to release fascia restrictions, results in runners feeling balanced and refreshed.

Today professional athletes, coaches, yoga teachers, personal trainers, bodybuilders and martial arts trainers are using Shiatsu to treat acute and chronic conditions such as:
  • Tendonitis
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Illiotibial pain
  • Knee pain
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Disc problems
  • Sciatica
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Neck Pain
  • Low Energy
  • Ankle and foot injuries
  • Stress
  • Migraines
Not only are shiatsu therapists helping their clients to feel stronger and balanced, but they are reporting fewer aches and less stiffness along with a reduction in injuries.

The Japanese Olympic team used Shiatsu and acupuncture during the London Olympics and as a result won 19 medals.  Their medical advisor and physiotherapist Minoru Yajima for Japan’s Triathlon team said “If an athlete feels pain, we use acupuncture as first aid. Most of team Japan’s medal winning medical strategy is preventative and based on a time-tested Japanese tradition – Shiatsu therapy.”
