Hypothyroid symptoms and natural solutions

Your thyroid gland is located in your neck just below your Adams apple. It produces a hormone called thyroxine. When your thyroid is under functioning, not producing enough thyroxine or the action of thyroxine is inhibited, this is known as hypothyroidism.

What are signs of poor thyroid function?

  • Sleeping problems including difficulties going to sleep, waking up often or waking up tired even after a long sleep.
  • Low energy requiring increased coffee intake.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Sensitive to the cold.
  • Hair loss or thinning.
  • Poor nails.
  • Memory loss or brain fog.
  • Irritability or mood swings.
  • Depression.
  • Weight gain and inability to lose weight easily.
  • Heart palpitations.
  • Unexplained joint aches and pains.
  • Constipation
  • Carbohydrate cravings.
  • Low libido.

Natural solutions to boost thyroid function

  1. Avoid Soya. Soya contains goitrogens, chemicals which suppress thyroid function.
  2. Avoid Gluten. Gluten causes nutrient deficiencies that can lead to thyroid problems.
  3. Reduce Stress. Stress causes your adrenals to produce a hormone called cortisol, which prevents thyroxine (namely T3) from entering your cells.
  4. Avoid Cholrine and Fluoride. Both these chemicals, found in drinking water, inhibit the uptake of iodine into your thyroid gland, which is needed for the production of thyroxine.
